The Spiritual Meaning of Lenten Fasting
Read Time: About 4 minutes
Lent is a sacred season of prayer, fasting, almsgiving, and reflection that prepares us for Good Friday and Easter. Beginning on Ash Wednesday and lasting 40 days, Lent invites us to turn away from distractions and open our hearts more fully to God. Through repentance and self‑denial, we remember the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus and grow in trust in God’s forgiveness, love, and mercy. In Lent we are called to open our hearts more fully to God, so that Easter becomes more than a routine observance and instead a true reception of God’s grace in our daily lives.
The ancient practice of fasting from food during Lent can free us from complacency and lead us to “hunger” for God, Pope Leo XIV said in his 2026 Lenten message. But how does that happen?
Fasting helps us to empty ourselves to all that we have been filling ourselves with to cope with the difficulties and disappointments of life. Modern life is full of too much of everything. We have too much food, drink, clothing, too many distractions, events, activities, bucket lists, video games, social media, drugs, and voices crowding our minds. No wonder the 21 Century is called the “Age of Anxiety”; there is little room for quiet and true rest.
But, fasting is about more than giving up food or wine or video games. It is about emptying ourselves of all that we cling on to so that God can fill us with something better. The things we turn to when we are afraid, lonely, or bored never really satisfy us and so we want more or different. Lent is calling us to detach from the things of this world so that we leave room for what really satisfies – Jesus.
Similarly, lent invites us to confront the human condition and our deep need for a Savior. Though many people ignore, disbelieve or don’t know their need for God, the daily news continues to reveal that we can’t heal our brokenness alone. God alone can heal us. During these 40 days, believers prepare their minds and hearts by remembering the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Through prayer, repentance, and self-denial, Lent deepens our awareness of Christ’s suffering and strengthens our dependence on God’s forgiveness, love, and mercy.
Let us be encouraged to fast from the distractions of modern life and spend some time each day in silence and contemplate the graces that God has brought into our lives, and the mercy and forgiveness He offers. Let us pray daily for the strength to stop the noise in our heads, give up for awhile the ideas of what it means to be successful, to achieve more, to be “someone” in the world, and to just sit in the loving presence of God. Imagine what fasting in this way might mean for each of us if we did it faithfully. Just think about what 40 days of fasting did for Jesus!
